You’d love to make them last as long as you possibly can, but other than keeping them out of direct sunlight, you’re not sure what to do. Here are some tips on how to extend the shelf life of your roses: 1. Remove the roses from the vase and put them in a temporary container. 2. Clean the vase by washing it thoroughly in water with household bleach. 3. Fill the vase with fresh water and add a half teaspoon of household bleach for each litre (16 fluid ounces) of water. 4. Remove your roses from their temporary container and lay them flat on a counter top. 5. Remove any leaves which will show below the waterline in the vase. 6. Cut about 20 mm (3/4 inch) from the base of each stem immediately before placing it in the vase. This removes any air bubbles. 7. Don’t place roses in drafts or direct sunlight, or near fruit, heaters, TVs or refrigerators. 8. Change the water daily to extend the vase life of your roses. By Michael Bens Why would anyone plan to binge eat? After all, for most of us, an eating binge is something to be avoided, and to be ashamed of when it cant be avoided. We all binge eat now and then, but for some people, it can be a real problem. Its that time when you lose control of your eating, when you eat well beyond the point of fullness, often choosing foods that are high in sugar or fat. Unfortunately, binging seems to be triggered by dieting, so it forms a vicious cycle. We diet to lose weight, then binge and gain weight, and so on. It seems like an endless, destructive cycle. It may surprise you to know, then, that many people who are at a normal, healthy weight are not immune to binges, but that they have learned to accept the eating binge and even to plan it, incorporating binging into their overall eating plan. This may sound crazy binging is excessive, out of control eating. The problem is that there may not be any way to avoid it or do away with it entirely. The binge is actually an evolutionary adaptation that worked very well for the first thirty thousand years of human history! Early humans who used tools and had language in other words, who were more or less like us have existed for more than 35 thousand years. Agriculture a method of producing food at will, and storing it so that there would be no scarcity, making food available all the time has existed for only about six thousand years, or a bit more. So, for the vast majority of human history, people survived by hunting and gathering. Sometimes, food was plentiful, while other times, there was none. Now do you see how binging fit in? Of course, during the times when there was plenty of food, early humans had to eat as much as they possibly could. This didnt lead to weight problems, because the food supply would disappear at regular intervals, and people would go without. Also, of course, these early humans used to move around a lot more than we do today! It is fair to assume that there were no significant weight problems among these early people, despite their acceptance of binging! Among civilized people who practiced agriculture, on the other hand, weight problems started do develop. And why? Because the food availability changed, but human behavior didnt. Humans still had the urge to binge, but there were no corresponding famine periods. Food was available all the time. This is pretty much the same state we are in today. It should be clear to us by now that binging is a behavior that isnt going to go away. So the thing to do is to is to accept binges as a reality of human life, and work around them. Take Christmas, for example. Many of us binge at Christmas, because of the availability of delicious food. Someone without weight issues will recognize that this is okay theyll simply cut back on food elsewhere, or when the season is over. If, for example, you love Christmas cookies, why not binge on them for a few days? You can eat the cookies instead of eating your regular meals, which you probably wont really want anyway. In this way, though your intake of fat and calories will go up a little, the weight gain wont be huge. And youll have had your fill of cookies, and will probably be ready to get back to healthy eating after a day or two. This idea may seem scary to many of us, because we are used to the idea that we have to have close control over our eating. Of course, eating cookies instead of meals is not a good idea in the long run. A few days wont hurt you, though, and may actually do you a lot of good. Youll feel satisfied, so you wont have to binge on cookies again for a long while. You may even have given your body something it needed who knows? In either case, there is no harm done in the long run if you indulge in a planned binge like this, and make up for it later. By Cathy Goodwin Q. Yesterday I was interviewed for a job that sounds really good. One question stumped me: What kind of boss do you like to work for? Caught by surprise, I said, I like a boss whos available to answer questions and give me feedback. How do I prepare for next time? A. Whether youre interviewing for a job, networking or making a client presentation, youve entered a business relationship. And business relationships differ from friendships. So when you enter a business or a sports arena, you put on a uniform and wear your game face. You follow the rules. Long-time successful players (like Diana Taurasi and Michael Jordan) know the rules so well they can trust their intuition. But most of us will view networking events and interviews as, well, a new ball game. We dont practice every day. Whole years even decades go by without a job interview. So when we come to the game, most of us need to be self-consciously aware of what we are doing. 1. Focus on the game, not your feelings. Before and after your business encounter, you can (and should) share feelings and concerns openly with a coach, consultant or counselor. But when youre face to face in a business meeting, your game face becomes part of your dress-for-success plan. A networking acquaintance asks, How are things going? You know he doesnt want to hear about problems with suppliers, child care or your crazy boss. Time to share a success story, matter-of-factly, without bragging. 2. So youre asked, What kind of boss do you like? Most likely, your prospective employer doesnt care what style of leadership you prefer. If youre working for a big company, chances are youll have multiple bosses in one year, each with different personalities, management styles and expectations. But your company does care about accomplishment. For a for-profit company, you might talk about working for a results-oriented boss. You then talk about the importance of contributing to the bottom line. Non-profits are guided by mission so you fine-tune your response. 4. Recognize that the game can change in the blink of an eye. Of course, you may realize that you will not be able to function in the environment presented by this organization. You can withdraw from the game altogether. But I encourage clients not to leave too fast. Just as a basketball game can reverse in the last twenty seconds, a job can change overnight. Literally. 5. Plan for getaways. Some people live for their game and their work. I know some Internet marketers who work sixteen hours a day happily. Some players and coaches live for the game, especially during March Madness. Jesus told us that there would be false doctrine, priest, deceivers, teachers and ministers. We cannot follow after the doctrines and precepts taught by man, for there is no salvation in them. Many religions, today, do not even speak of salvation or repentance, for the soul of man. If there is to be no resurrection of the soul, then we would be living a life, that would never be held accountable for. Men such as, Goliath, Hitler, Stalin, Saddam Hussein, and even Osayme Ben Louden, would never be held accountable for their, murders, and actions, that were unrighteous. But we must also remember that a lie, in the eyes of God, is also punishable by everlasting torment in the lake of fire. So a lier, and a murderer are accounted the same punishment, for with God any unrighteousness will never enter into the kingdom of Heaven. This is where repentance is very important. We being a gentile race of people, must realize that without Christ, and His sacrifice for all men, we would have no hope, and would still be worshiping devils. They were the only people that wanted the true God, they were a one God, religious people. These were the people that were given the first written law, written by God, and delivered by His servant, Moses.
