Acidophilus: To Eat or Not to Eat

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Hector_Milla] Hector Milla Who knows what acidophilus is. It is not something really difficult and nowadays it is something better known by more and more people since everybody looks for products with components that may be beneficial for us. Experts explain that acidophilus is a nutritional supplement product, often added to milk or sold as a capsule, which aid in digestion. Acidophilus contains one or more bacteria, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus (A), Lactobacillus casei (C), Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Bifidobacterium bifidus (B) and Streptococcus thermophilus. It is estimated that in our gastrointestinal tract live more than 400 different kinds of bacteria. The body depends on beneficial bacteria to manufacture B vitamins as well as to produce lactase and other antibacterial substances. According to some scientifics, acidophilus contains bacteria that have a symbiotic, or mutually beneficial, relationship with the human stomach. Experts explain that these bacteria help break down complex food molecules and inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria. Acidophilus is useful for people with bacterial or digestive problems or yeast infections, as well as people on antibiotics. Products that contain acidophilus are generally known as probiotics. Acidophilus history says that years later after Louis Pasteur discovered pasteurization, the method of heating milk to kill harmful bacteria; Elie Metchnikoff researched and discovered the health-promoting capabilities of lactobacillus bacteria when he observed that people who ate yogurt tended to live longer. This scientific won a Nobel Prize in 1908 because of his work after demonstrating an apparent link between Lactic Acid Bacteria, the ones included in Acidophilus, and extended lifespan. Blood:Water Mission - Hope for a Hurting Continent

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By Lisa J. Lehr Imagine, for a moment, someone having to care for a family member–or perhaps a whole family–suffering from HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Imagine that this person lives with the daily knowledge that she, too, may be infected with the virus, and may soon be too weak to continue. Imagine that the water she and her family drink, cook in, bathe in, wash their clothes and dishes in, and do everything else in their daily lives with, is contaminated with parasites and bacteria that hamper their fight against illness. Imagine her and her children, and all the other women and children in her village–the ones healthy enough to manage–having to travel up to ten miles a day on foot to collect water that is safe to use. Now stop imagining. This is real life for millions of Africans. When Dan Haseltine, lead singer of the multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning band Jars of Clay, visited Africa in 2002, he was deeply shaken by what he saw. Poverty, social injustice, and physical suffering overwhelmed him. Haseltine returned home determined to turn his despair into hope and, ultimately, action. Sharing his experience with his bandmates, he soon created a vision of clean blood and clean water for Africa, a continent that would be transformed by Christ’s sacrificial symbols of blood and water. Blood:Water Mission was born. A nonprofit organization founded to address the HIV/AIDS crisis on the African continent by providing clean water, Blood:Water Mission is greatly reducing the impact of the disease while addressing the underlying issues of poverty and social oppression. They’re building wells, supporting medical facilities, and working toward a changed worldview through personal relationships with African communities. Jars of Clay’s audience is mainly churchgoers and American youth. Recognizing that these two groups are uniquely equipped to respond to suffering in the world, they saw a shining opportunity to share God’s love and mercy with this hurting continent. They now use their platform to bring awareness to the plight of Africans, linking the needs of one population to the talents and resources of the other, changing lives on both sides of the ocean. Dan Haseltine tells about one of his most memorable experiences: “We arrived at a support group for people with HIV/AIDS. They [had] formed a group to combat the horrible stigma attached to contracting the HIV/AIDS virus. They all had their stories of being disowned by family, or excommunicated by fearful people in their village. They would meet and encourage one another like most support groups would do [and] also developed programs to be caregivers to the orphans in the village. They would farm and provide food, they also spoke out about destroying the stigma of AIDS. “It was an amazing group of men and women, but the most heartbreaking was a boythe youngest member of the support group. He was seven. His name was Kevin. He told us how much the group meant to him and how he would not have lived if it were not for the love and care of [these] people. He also told us he had dreams of becoming a doctor. I had a difficult time knowing that this little boy’s hopes and dreams would not line up with the reality that he would most likely be dead within a year. “We all felt the hopelessness of this young boy’s place. We all felt again the rage inside that we do so little for such amazing people. All [of this group] will die in the coming years. They will be replaced by others who will try to make a difference in the time they are given. I stared across the small room at two mothers both holding children in their arms. These children were also infected [and] will die. [They] could have been protected. Again, why are we so blind to this need? Oh how our comfort betrays our greedy hearts! “We prayed with the group and walked across the street to a small building where some music was filling the air. They were called the Black Rovers: a group of teenagers with a gift of music, singing songs about the horrors of HIV/AIDS with a passion to stir up the community. It was humbling. As a musician, I am very aware of the powerful combination of music and passion. I spoke to them and encouraged them to keep doing their music. “They made one comment about needing louder instruments so that they could play for larger crowds. All the instruments they played were handmade. The guitars were made from gas cans and sticks. The drums were calves skin and cans. It sounded wonderful.” You can read more journal entries on Blood:Water Mission’s website. Blood:Water Mission’s work depends on the generosity of people who have more than they need to survive–which includes pretty much everyone reading this article. Although the enormity of the tragedy is difficult to grasp, the good news is that it takes only one American dollar to provide clean water to one African for one year. The 1000 Wells Project is currently building wells in 1000 African communities. Businesses, churches, schools, artists, and individuals are collecting funds to sponsor the construction of these wells. In the process, they are learning about how HIV/AIDS affects African communities, and what it means to partner humbly with them to effect positive change. With a clean water supply nearby, women and children will no longer have to spend all day hauling water back to their families. People with HIV will live longer and better, supporting their families and contributing to their communities. All will become stronger in the process. As a participant in Blood:Water Mission’s 1000 Wells Project, you, too, will be changed. Please visit their website, www.bloodwatermission.com, to learn about the variety of ways you can help. Or contact them at bloodwater@bloodwatermission.com or 615-550-4296. Think of it. One dollarone year of clean water for someone struggling to survive. Tips for Planting Flower Bulbs

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By Robbie Darmona Flower bulbs are extremely easy to plant and take care of. Moreover, many of the famous flowers are grown from flower bulbs: so you need to learn the basic rules of thumb to start planting your garden. Flowers such as hyacinths, daffodils, crocuses, tulips are all grown from flower bulbs, and we all know how important they are for a gardens flower bed. So, the sooner you learn to plant flower bulbs, the faster your garden will become utterly irresistible and full of colors. Flower bulbs are best to be planted in April- May, or slightly later for warmer areas. Spring flower bulbs can be potted both in garden pots or containers, as well as in natural garden flower beds. You can choose any size of a container to plant and grow the flower bulbs. In the warmer regions of Australia, tulips need about 6-8 week period of refrigeration before they are planted. The artificial weather is needed because they should be fully grown before they are planted. Tulip bulbs are very brittle and sensitive, they need special treatment before planting. You have to make sure you dont freeze them too much, otherwise they will never recover. You can plant every kind of flower bulbs using a flower bulb planting tool. Flower bulbs such as Tulips, Daffodils, Jonquils, Hyacinths can be planted easier when you use this planting tool. It is helpful if your hands are not accustomed to planting and you cannot dig the soil manually. Flower bulb planting tool is very useful when planting perennials, too. Flower bulbs are important to be planted at a certain depth: twice as deep as their real size. A single exception to this rule make the Australian flower bulbs: they should be planted even deeper in the soil, because of the warm weather in Australia. Flower bulbs also need a lot of mulching to help them grow to their full capacity. This includes preparation of the soil, using fertilizers. Prepare the soil several weeks before the planting of the flower bulbs itself. Watering plays also important role: you should water the bulb only ONCE after planting. Dont be tempted to water it once again: wait until it has shown up on the surface. Only when shoots are springing up should you water the plant, otherwise rotting of the flower bulbs may occur. You should keep the soil moist, because extremely dry soil can cause damage to the plant, and can also stress the bulbs. Planting flower bulbs can be either in the garden, or in special containers. Garden planting requires using a special fertilizer prior to the planting process. Planting flower bulbs in containers is another point of interest. You should first buy a quality soil, a mix of substantial nutrients, which will evoke faster growing of the flower bulbs. There is a huge variety of potting mixes, which you can find at minimal price. Another thing is to choose the size and shape of your container, so that it fits the type of the flower, and also has enough space for the flower bulb to grow. Larger pots should be used for planting of higher flowers, such as Monet Tulips or Dutch Iris. Flowers such as Anemones and Crocus require smaller containers. Shallow bowls and pots are generally used for planting Hyacinths or miniature Daffodils. Containers should also have moist soil, so that plants can grow easily. 1 Guy + 3 Girls = Interesting Dinner Date

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By Gary Kelly My humble relationship advice for women at 40. Recently, I had the opportunity to play a round of golf with a female friend of mine and two of her female friends as well. After a great round of golf, we went back to her house where I proceeded to cook dinner for all of us. Because I was a friend, male and cooking dinner, the ladies seemed to feel very comfortable talking in front of me about their dating lives. Holy cow. What an eye opener that was. Let me first start by saying, I am not all that and a bag of chips -far from it actually. I have my hang ups and feel the normal insecurities most of us face on a daily basis. What I heard and experienced that fateful night at dinner almost made me run screaming from the house. As the night progressed and wine flowed, I began to see a side of this group of three women that had me questioning if I would ever date again. I have never heard a group of people bitch and gripe about so many people in my entire life. They looked like three Queens, sipping red wine and damning the rest of us who happen to be male to the guillotine. I felt like asking them if they saw any correlation between the fact they had such impossibly high standards for men and the fact they were all single themselves. Furthermore, it appeared this group of forty something women had never had a serious relationship, either past or present, where they seemed sincerely happy. I am not suggesting all women are like this. If however, you find you are approaching forty or on the North side of forty, single and without any prospects for any kind of date soon, you may want to consider the following advice. If you are looking for perfection from a man then you damn well better bring perfection to the table yourself. These three women were holding up impossibly high standards that no man could realistically attain. One woman in the group was obviously very good looking, had a good job, loved golf and seemed very bright. There was a litany of stories from her about failed relationships and unsuccessful dating experiences. Nice guy, cute, clean and neat, great job but drove a crappy car. Perhaps he didnt see the value in wasting money on a sports car? Perhaps he valued saving some of his money for later in life? Great guy, great job and great everything else but had a weird haircut and ear hair. Awesome guy, sincere, respectful, bright, witty and charming but was not well enough endowed. Im not suggesting women settle for any reason. None of us should do that. I am saying that we all need to set realistic expectations of what we are looking for in a date. What would happen if the great guy with the crappy car were given a chance to explain himself? What would happen if Mr. Awesome with the small penis had a good friend who could make livestock weep and cry? If they had given any of these guys half a chance, they may have found their potential dating circle may have expanded nicely. I have no trouble getting dates. Its not because I am the best looking guy, with a great body, a million dollar bank account, a fantastic car and I could stand in for Ron Jeremy. I get dates because I realize I am far from perfect but I am a sincerely nice person. My expectations for myself are realistic and more importantly, I set realistic expectations for my dates. We have all heard women pine for the good guys in a relationship, wondering where they are. How come there are no good guys left they seem to constantly complain. There are nice guys out there. They do exist! Ladies, you need to give some of us a chance. Dating is a lot like poker; you have to know how to play the cards you have been dealt. You can only bluff for so long. If these women continue to play their hands the way they have been going, it is only a matter of time before someone calls their hand. Choosing Bridal Accessories

Friday, October 26th, 2007

By Kim Prissel Bridal accessories are not a second thought. Much planning is needed for the perfect bridal accessories. They can range from a tiara, gloves, jewelry, handbag, shawl/wrap and shoes. Didnt we all love Audrey Hepburns gloves in Breakfast at Tiffanys? Start with your shoes. There are hundreds of styles of bridal shoes to choose from. Which one is best for you? Some of the questions you need to answer before going shopping for your shoes are these: Am I accustomed to wearing this high of a heel? Choosing a heel that is too high can make for a very uncomfortable day. The last thing you want to be thinking about on your wedding day is how much your feet hurt. If youre not used to spiked heels, perhaps a platform for height might be a better idea. Are these the same shoes I will be wearing for dancing? If you choose a higher heel for the wedding ceremony, you may want to switch to a lower heel and more comfortable shoe for the reception. Brides spend most of the night on their feet. What season will the shoes be worn?Knowing what season your wedding will occur will help you choose an open or closed toe shoe. Is my dress white or ivory? It is important to know the exact color when shopping for shoes, there are many variations of white and off white. Your shoes should match. If you choose to dye your shoes to match, do this early, in case you need to send them back. Does my dress have a specific style? If your dress has a specific style, try to match your shoes to that style. If youre wearing a Victorian lace dress, button up granny boots might look adorable. However, they might not suit other styles. Try the shoes and the dress together. Does the fabric of my dress and shoes coordinate? Satin is a high gloss material that matches perfectly with bridal gowns that have satin bottoms. Luxe or Crepe Boca replaced the previous industry standard of Peau de Soie and looks gorgeous with any crepe or soft textured dress. Ultra Satin looks well with both dull and matte satin gowns. Does my dress have a lot of decoration? If your dress has a lot of embroidery at the edge, or many layers of tulle beneath, a highly decorated shoe may catch on the dress. We dont want the bride to trip. Do I want something funky and different? There are tons of shoes available on the market. From the classic Mary Jane style, to sling backs, buttons, bows, rhinestones, buckles, beads, sequins, jewels, pearls, even shoes with lights that flash when you walk. Will the shoes be worn outdoors? Weather can play an important factor on your choice of shoes. Dyeables can bleed if worn out in wet grass or sand. If the wedding is casual, you can choose less formal shoes. There are even bridal flip-flops available in the market. Do I have the price of my shoes budgeted? Shoes prices can vary widely. Depending on what you choose, prices can range from $40 pumps available online to $485 Vera Wang shoes. If designer shoes are what you want, be sure to budget them. Overall, the above questions should be looked over before you go shopping. Its easy to get distracted while shopping and end up choosing an inappropriate shoe. You want to look great and be comfortable on your very important day. The Truth About Women Revealed

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Caterina Christakos Have you ever imagined what it would be like to read a woman’s to mind - especially a woman you want to get into your bed? How about just being able to fake it enough that she thinks you can read her mind? Here are some powerful clues that can tell you if she is interested in you and the type of things she might be interested in in bed. 1) Is she biting her lower lip or licking it? She is definitely into you. This is a little signal that she isn’t even aware she is doing. It ranks right up there with playing with her hair and crossing and uncrossing her legs. 2) Does she lean into you when you are talking? You have grabbed her attention. 3) Does she touch you alot? If she is caressing your arm or finding excuses to touch you then you have a huge chance of scoring tonight. 4) Does she love it when you order food for her and make decisions? This might be a sign that she wants you to take charge in the bedroom. If she enjoys having her hands help down by you during sex, she might be into a little light bondage.Start with scarves to test her reaction. 5) Watch her while she eats her dinner. Does she really get into the meal, especially the dessert? Try adding some whipped cream or chocolate syrup to your night play. 6) Want a new way to turn her on? Try renting some erotic videos with a story line. Try the Red Shoe Diaries, Henry and June or Eyes Wide Shut. If she likes the scene in Eyes Wide Shut where they are wearing masks she may be open to experimentation and role play. 7) Want to get her in the mood? Try having a picnic on your living room floor. Include wine or champagne, strawberries, whipped cream and finger foods that you can feed each other. She will find it romantic and you have the privacy she may need to show her appreciation. Bridging The Gap With Traditional Healers

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

By Terence Coleman Traditional healers have carried this stigma for generations until today. Traditional healers are very proud of their heritage calling, and wish to make it know that they are not “witch doctors”. The traditional healers play an integral part of African cultures and communities and have since time immemorial. They fulfill functions that go far beyond those of bio-medically trained healthcare workers. The traditional healer has an enormous influence on the patient and his family and makes a very positive and beneficial contribution to the cultural and spiritual life of the African individually and within the community. To become a Traditional Healer is a call from your ancestors and our almighty God. You cannot go to any university or institution to study traditional healing. It is a call that is comes from within yourself, whether you are rich, poor, young or old. There are tribal elders (Gobela) who will guide your calling, where you under go a process called (Thwasa). You graduation is determined after a certain period of training is completed. There are different categories of Traditional Healers as in Orthodox Western Medicine we also have our specialties. The aim is to cure, heal and not kill or to be destructive to our people. Remember your life is our concern also healthy families make healthy communities, healthy communities make a healthy nation and healthy nation creates a healthy economy. An African patient consults a medical doctor, and a third figure is often present, albeit unseen. This is undoubtedly the Traditional Healer, who has already been consulted or will subsequently be consulted by the patient. There are about 200,000 traditional healers practicing in Southern Africa. Every traditional healer on average consults 200/300 people within their community region. The Medical Association of South Africa commissioned a study to provide doctors with a better and empathetic insight into the world of the African people, where a large number of patients reside. In addition, it is hoped that the study would dispel the fallacies and prejudices that have clouded the western doctors’ perceptions of the traditional healers and their activities. We have only begun bridging the gap and the first success story of the traditional healers is that the “Traditional Health Practitioners Act”, has been passed through parliament and signed by the president of South Africa on the 11th February 2005, (Act No. 35 of 2004: Traditional Health Practitioners’ Act). We are currently waiting for the appointment of the Registrar by the minister after consultation with various traditional health practitioners. How To Get A Serious Relationship - Using Rejection To Pave The Way To TRUE Success

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

By C. Hopkins Most men aren’t skillful or successful when it comes to meeting and dating women and having a serious relationship. There are two main reasons for not attaining a serious relationship: they don’t get out there and sell themselves, meet women and make connections. And when, once in every blue moon, they do try to have a serious relationship with a girl, they fall flat on their faces, not knowing how to handle the situation, the conversation, the interaction and attraction. There’s a single word that ties these two reasons for failure to have a serious relationship together, it’s rejection. Men who would love to meet and date a beautiful girl and have a serious relationship choose not to go out and actually try to make it happen, on the most part, because of a deep-seated fear of rejection. They hate the idea that instead of a serious relationship they might get shot down and embarrassed. And they know that if they try their hardest and STILL get rejected, they definitely have no hope with women, now or ever. So, they prefer to stay at home with the vague ambition that one day they might make something happen. On the other hand, there are men out there that do try to meet and get together with girls and have a serious relationship - and, unfortunately, they get rejected every now and then. Once it’s happened a couple of times, those serious relationship brush-offs take their toll on the guy: his confidence dwindles, his sense of humor begins to fade, and most noticeably, his motivation vanishes. He becomes like 80% of the rest of the male population: a serious relationship dreamer and not a serious relationship do’er. The first thing you need to do is recognize the POSITIVE function rejection serves. You need to define it in your mind the serious relationship rejection. What is it and what does it mean? Serious relationship rejection often comes in the following forms:Serious relationship rejection form # 1. You’ve been talking to a girl for a while and things seem to be going well but when you ask to see her again or suggest swapping numbers she suddenly freezes up on you and shuts you out. Serious relationship rejection form #2. You try to get talking to a girl but she only gives you the minimal amount of recognition possible and doesn’t allow you to start a real conversation. Serious relationship rejection form #3. You’ve been on a couple of dates with a girl but have yet to take it further. When you try to progress the relationship, she clams up and becomes distant and seemingly uninterested. Whatever type of serious relationship rejection you’ve experience or fear the most, you need to fully recognise what it is. It’s a sign that one or more components of your serious relationship game - that is, your ability to be successful with women - isn’t functioning correctly. It’s like a flashing red light in a submarine, it’s telling you something ain’t right and, most importantly, that you need to DO something to fix it. That’s the key point most men consistently miss about a serious relationship - they think being rejected is the end of the line, game over. In fact, it’s simply a changing of the tracks on your path to success. So don’t take serious relationship rejection too hard…it is only a minor roadblock that is easily bypassed. Changing Our Eating Behaviour

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

By Scott Haywood Changing our eating behaviour is one of the critical lifestyle changes necessary if we are going to successfully lose weight and keep it off. For many people, changing eating habits is one of the hardest things theyll ever do, as anybody who has gone on a diet and tried to stick to it can attest. If youve tried to change your eating habits before and have failed, or if youre about to embark on a weight loss plan of your own that involves a change towards healthier eating, the tips in this article are designed to improve your chances of success. First things first One of the reasons most people fail to stick to a diet is that they take the wrong first step. There are broadly two ways to change your eating habits in order to help you lose weight: 1. Change what you eat 2. Change how much you eat Ideally, in order to maximize weight loss over the LONG TERM we need to change both. But its not a good idea to change both at once. This is where most people make mistakes. They try to change both at once or if they only change one, they change the wrong one first. When faced with the above two options, most people take option 1 first when the best first option to take to help you lose weight is typically option 2. Why? The reason is actually quite simple. It is far easier for most of us to go from eating 3 to 2 pieces of fried chicken for dinner than it is to go from 3 pieces of fried chicken to a garden salad. Sure, eating the salad will help us lose more weight than forgoing only one piece of fried chicken, but permanent weight loss is a long term process and going down to 2 pieces of chicken forever is far better than eating a garden salad for dinner for 1 week and then going back to 3 pieces of chicken for the rest of our life. Remember, we are trying to make permanent lifestyle changes here and most of us wont stick to these changes if they are too radical compared to what we are currently doing. Food reduction tips Here are some tips to help you reduce the amount you eat: Making small permanent changes are better than radical changes that you wont be able to live with. Don’t worry about falling back to your old behaviour for a day or two, only the long term counts. Use portion controlled packaged foods to help you (prepackaged frozen meals and single serve snack packs for example). Use smaller plates than usual to serve your meals. When eating out, buy entre sized meals or share a full sized meal with your partner or friend. Separate a third or quarter of the food on your plate and move it to one side before you begin eating, then leave that third or quarter uneaten at the end of the meal. Eat small amounts of food every couple of hours so youre not starving at main meal times. Drink plenty of water throughout the day most people mistake thirst for hunger. Eat slowly and concentrate on your meal dont watch TV while youre eating for example. Gradually reduce your serving sizes over time until they reach the ideal size. When eating take away, dont buy super-sized options. Remember that to make these changes habit you are going to have to continue to practice them consciously for awhile (maybe up to 3 months) until they become unconscious. Be the last one at the table to start eating. Put your fork or food down between bites. Chew or swallow each bite before the next. Pause in the middle of the meal. Dont eat while cooking this increases your total serving size, often without being noticed. Place leftover food in small, single serve containers. Have soup or a salad with low calorie dressing to begin a meal. As soon as you begin to feel full, stop eating. Try to reduce stress in your life and other things that cause you to eat on emotion. The second step OK, youve gradually started to reduce the amount of food you eat and are starting to slowly (but surely) lose weight. If you havent already, now is the time to start to become more active to improve your general level of fitness, increase your energy levels and of course speed up the weight loss process. Now that these habits are well established, its time to start thinking about making minor positive adjustments to what we eat. Instead of eating a piece of fried chicken for dinner for example (weve migrated from 3 down to 2 and now down to 1) maybe we can have a piece of fried chicken without the skin or a piece of grilled or broiled chicken instead. And maybe we can replace half of the chips that accompany our chicken with a corn cob or a handful of your favourite steamed vegetables. See how were making small positive changes that we can live with? While changing what we eat is often more difficult that slowly but gradually reducing how much we eat, there are things that we can do to make sure that when we do begin to change this aspect of our behaviour that we are successful.
