Getting a College Degree. 5 Myths That Can Stop You From Earning Yours

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

By Jack Mize The college experience should not be missed. If you are right out of high school and have the opportunity to go to college, by all means do not miss out! But for adults, who for whatever reason missed this chance, going back to college to get your degree or perhaps starting for the first time is a big decision. Work, family and social obligations may make you may wonder if earning a college degree is possible. Well, Im here to tell you it is. Night School is not your only choice. Do not let preconceived notions of the college experience stop you. 1. It costs too much to go back to college. Really? How much does it cost not to have your degree? According to the March 2000 report by the U.S. Census Bureau, college graduates earn an average of 62% more income than non-college graduates. 2. I do not have time to attend classes. I know I didnt. That is why I found an alternative. You can earn an entire accredited bachelors degree without ever stepping foot in a classroom. There are numerous options for getting your degree that do not include campus attendance. 3. I do not have the time to study. Like most Americans, my TV was on constantly. I found by just turning it off I had more than enough time to finish my degree and continue on through graduate school. 4. Im too old. It is never too late to learn. There are many reasons for getting a college degree and experiencing a great sense of accomplishment. Maybe youre past youre working years. Many alternative students, including seniors, are completing their degrees for self satisfaction. 5. It will take too long. This is one of the biggest myths of all. Most people think that tackling a degree will take 6-10 years since it will have to be done part-time. If you take traditional route, you are probably right. However, with the many distance education options, you could complete an entire bachelors degree in less than a year. Even going at an extremely relaxed pace, you should be finished well under the four years it would take going the traditional route Jack Mize, the “Degree Wiz” tested out of three years of college in less than one year using credit by examination. He spent less than $3000 total on tution, testing fees and study materials. Jack graduated with a B.S. in Liberal Studies from Excelsior College and M.S. in Information Archtecture from Capitol College. Online dating is the right move for someone who is shy or a loner. You can date without having to take your date to restaurants, clubs or bars! If you are planning on online dating then you should invest some of your precious money on a webcam. If you want to be successful then a webcam is a must. It will allow you to see the person you are contacting to ensure they are who they say they are. Yes, photographs are posted on online dating sites but often they are old, unclear or morphed. A webcam will give you the true picture of the person and it is also a lot more personal. You can actually see and talk to the person simultaneously. You will be able to judge the persons reactions and check out their expressions. A webcam will also be useful when you have finally made up your mind to meet the person. You will actually recognize the person without having to worry about who you are going to be meeting. Remember as a word of caution, when you are meeting the person the first time, always meet in a public place no matter how long you have been dating the person online. If you intend meeting the person in lonely and private place, always take a friend or family member along. Online dating is a wonderful experience and you meet someone who suits your personality traits and your likes and dislikes. Rubber Stamps in Wet Plaster Create Dynamite Wall Finishes

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

By Victoria Larsen A super twist on Raised Plaster Stenciling” that’s easy to do and leaves a great “impression”; Rubber stamps pressed in to the wet plaster.Where Raised Plaster Stenciling creates a design that stands out from the wall, using rubber stamps pressed in to wet plaster creates indentations that give a really different look that creates awesome shadows. There are literally millions of rubber stamp designs in your local craft store, rubber stamp specialty shop or on the Internet that you can choose to create your own designer walls. Choose a large design so that it shows up well on your wall. Consider plant elements such as ferns, leaves, flower heads and so on. Or get crazy and combine a number of designs. If you have high gloss or semi-gloss wall paint currently on your wall, prime with water based primer first. All other paint types need no pre-preparation. Using a wide, flat blade plastic scraper (found in the paint section of your local home or hardware store), smooth an even coat of joint compound (about 1/8″ thick over a 3×3 foot section. Thicker joint compound may result in a blurred impression) on to the wall. Once the area has been covered, randomly stamp your design, pressing it in to the joint compound. You have about 30 minutes before the joint compound begins to dry so take your time and have a blast. Turning the stamp in different directions creates a beautiful “wallpaper” effect.Since the joint compound dries so slow, if you dont like the placement of what you stamped, simply smooth it over and do it again. Its very forgiving. Complete the wall in 3 x 3 sections for a full wall effect. If you only want a border of your chosen design, simply run a line of masking tape at the top and bottom of your chosen border depth and apply joint compound to only that area. Stamp your border as you choose. Allow the joint compound to dry completely and to cure for 48 hours before finishing with wall color.A very light coat of water based primer will seal the raw joint compound and prepare it for further color. Be careful not to allow the primer or paint to pool inside the design or you will risk loosing some of its detail. To color the design, either paint over it with standard wall paint or simply add wall paint in your favorite color to translucent wall glaze until the desired level of color is achieved. Working in 3′ x 3′ sections, wipe the glaze mixture over the wall, paying close attention to the design, then immediately wipe or blot it off (depending on the look you like) with a dry rag or sponge. Enjoy your designer walls and revel in the fact that you have something totally unique and hand done by you! Green Sand Reconditioning In The Hobby Foundry

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

By Colin Croucher Green sand is one of the oldest foundry moulding mediums known to the industry, its use in the foundry can be traced back to the early times. But do you know how to get the best from it. While it’s use in commercial foundry operations has diminished somewhat, green sand still has its place in the hobby foundry. Green sand can be made up using quite basic materials, and is still being used to produce sound quality aluminium, bronze, and grey iron castings in many hobby foundries scattered across the globe. Green sand is also ecologically friendly in that it can be recycled & reused almost indefinitely, before being discarded in favour of a newly mulled batch. When green sand was the preferred commercial moulding material, special machines were used to reprocess the sand to remove foreign objects and to break down the dry sand lumps and recondition the sand again for the moulding shop. Because green sand is reconditioned or re-tempered by the addition of water, it requires quite a bit of processing work to make it suitable again for moulding work. Unfortunately, the hobby foundry worker does not have the luxury of automatic processing machines, so the reconditioning task for the hobby foundry worker is reduced to a laborious manual process, which can soon become tiresome if a large quantity of sand has to be processed. When we speak about reprocessing green sand, we are not talking about the mulling or milling of a new batch of green sand, which is quite a different issue. To recondition green sand it is normally fed into a sand slinger to break the lumps and clods, which form naturally in the green sand mould during solidification of the metal castings, much of the moisture content of the sand is also driven off during this stage. One option for the hobby worker to recondition and retemper green sand is to use the slow manual hand sieving method whereby the operator manually processes the sand through a wire riddle in order to break up the lumpy sand, then the retempering can be done by slowly adding water and cutting, turning and dumping the sand with a shovel. Yes, it is hard work and a slow process, and one in which most hobby workers will rapidly lose interest. If you want to use green sand in the hobby foundry, but don’t want to retemper the sand by this hard labour manual system, then, there is another way. The quickest, easiest way to retemper small batches of green sand such as the hobby worker would require, is to use a motorised gyratory riddle. The riddle is capable of processing a large quantity of sand in 10 to 15 minutes, which includes the fluffing and the retempering process, it is virtually a simultaneous three way process. The quality of green sand produced through this method is second to none, and the motorised gyratory riddle greatly reduces the back breaking labour to virtually zero. Anyone with general metal fabricating skills could easily build a riddle, the material costs are not expensive and are readily available. The main requirements are: A small electric motor, a wire sieve, some square tubing to build the frame, plus the instructions to build an efficient machine. Solid plaster and cement rendering workers in the building trade could also use this type of machine to prepare mortars and wall-finishing materials applied by the baggin To find out more about the labour saving motorised gyratory riddle, visit our web site: http://www.myhomefoundry.com/library.html This article is available for reprint as long as the link to our web site remains at the footer of this article. It May SEEM Like Every Man In The World Can Approach Women, But Most CAN’T

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

By Scot McKay OK Ladies, I know how it can be. Everywhere you go some guy invariably tries to hit on you. Maybe he even goes for the advanced routine of putting the moves on you. This could be happening to you every day. Possibly several times every day. And Im fully on board with the fact that such situations are far from limited to ready-made scenarios like bars, speed dating venues, etc. I realize you cant even buy a flippin airline ticket without dealing with someone cleverly lining up behind you in Boarding Group A with designs on getting to sit next to you for a cozy two hour trip from San Antonio to Chicago Midway. Happens every time, does it not? Theres no wonder that many women go through life believing that all men approach whatever woman they want, whenever they want as second nature. Similarly, my impression is that most women believe that if a man is interested in her, hell go through the motions of approaching her like all the rest of the guys seem to. Therefore, if a man isnt bothering to come up to her and make conversation, he simply must not be all that interested in doing so. Not true. Not by a long shot. My estimation, based on personal research and studying the work of others, is that at least 90% of all men have some trouble approaching and talking to a woman that they do not know. For many, trouble could be better described as paralyzing fear. For others guys, its simply a matter of mental programming that discourages them from bothering to try. Let me offer three potential reasons why this is the case: 1) Men have been taught that women do not want to be approached Whenever you see a fictional portrayal of a man approaching a woman in movies or on TV, there is a predictable resultespecially in comedic situations. The guy always tries some cheesy line and is invariably shot down HARD by the woman. Hilarity ensues. This is, for lack of a better description, a sure thing when its time to get a laugh. Never mind that the James Bonds of the world successfully meet women left and right in more dramatic roles. Guys see those guys as unrealistic characters, and the negative image of women comedically shooting them down is what sticks to the subconscious mind. Heck, theres even a commercial about a guy with bad breath hitting on a woman hes sitting next to on the plane, isnt there? 2) The perceived risks are too high What if shes married? Im sure she already has a boyfriend. Theres not really enough time to have a conversation. Its too loud in here anyway. By rationalizing away the opportunity with contrary thoughts, many men talk themselves out of taking any action to meet a woman, thereby nixing the chance of meeting her completelyand forever. 3) They cant handle the thought of getting beat by a girl Men have egos. Theres really no denying it. And one idea that the vast majority of guys cannot even stand the thought of is getting beaten by a girl in a competitive environment. Consider this. When a man approaches a woman, the common belief is that theres really no hiding the fact that hes doing so because he is romantically interested. As such, in his own mind he becomes very vulnerable at the point he begins a conversation with a woman he doesnt know. She holds all the cards, and has all the power when this happens. If she rejects his advance, she apparently positions herself as having power and authority over the man. After all, he wanted her, and she chose not to want him in return. Her social status is therefore perceived to be better than his. He LOST. Some ladies reading these words are hearing ideas that they have never, ever considered. After all, being afraid of girls is elementary school stuff, isnt it? Well, old habits sometimes die hard. Some guys grow old but never grow up, and Im sorry to report that this is one area that applies. Some guys reading this are likely coming to grips with concepts that have haunted them for years, without really having been able to pinpoint exactly why. So what to do? How can men have an easier time approaching women? And ladies, what can you do to make the experience of men approaching you more enjoyable? Find out answers to those questions and many more in next week’s article entitled “Here’s To Success For Men Who Approach Women…And For The Women They Approach”. Getting a Perfect Skin Bronze

Saturday, October 13th, 2007

By Trevor Mulholland When making a trip to the beach, you usually go equipped with several things. A towel, a hat and sunglasses, a big bottle of sun block, comfortable clothes and slippers, lots of water and, if you’re planning to spend most of the day there, maybe a chair and a large umbrella. But sometimes, even with all these preparations, the day ends with your skin either too dark or too red to look attractive. This is only natural; there is no way to control or accurately predict the strength of the sun rays, and thus no way to measure how long you need to stay in it to get that perfect shade of bronze that you crave. There are a few ways to get the shade of your choice but of all those, only two are worth mentioning. The first is temporary, cheap and easy to apply. Tanning lotions can be found at any drugstore or supermarket with instructions as to how to get the best effects. All you have to do is rub the lotion evenly over your skin and sit long enough to let it dry, which usually isn’t more than ten minutes. If you require a darker shade, simply add another layer on top of the first one, and so on. If you’re in a rush for your tan, this is the way to go. The other method is not cheap and not very fast, but doesn’t come off in the shower either. Using a tanning bed regularly will ensure that your tan stays, and the color is entirely controllable. All you have to do is adjust the lamps to the strength that you want. If you don’t know exactly how high they should be, simply ask around in a nearby fitness center or spa or check the accompanying manual. Spreading a little oil on your skin before diving under the lamps can make the process a little faster. However, lying under them for hours on end is not healthy and will do more harm than good in the long run. Of course, both of these methods don’t give you the joy and relaxation you can get from the beach, even if your skin gets a little burned as a sacrifice. Science, no matter how convenient, cannot compete against the beauty of nature. It is unfortunate that most people do not have the time to enjoy much of it and reap the benefits. Suntan-bed.com provides you with information on how to determine what the best tanning beds are and where you can get your tanning bed supplies. Relationship: Commitment Errors

Friday, October 12th, 2007

By Michael Douglas COMMITMENT: A ten letter word consisting of 3 vowels and 7 consonants; a word that symbolises union, loyalty, monogamy, togetherness, love, mutual respect and perhaps all those priceless sentiments which we hold in such high esteem. It’s a word almost always associated with marriage; a word that means so much in theory. Yet in practice is so more often than not reduced to a mere string of alphabetical letters. Marriages today are crumbling for lack of commitment. So why get married in the first place if you have no intention of being loyal? Most ‘contemporary’ women, it seems, have tuned into ‘Desperate Housewives’. The infamous line of “It meant nothing. It was just sex’ being the buzz. Yes, times are hard, there is too much temptation, we are only human, and we all make mistakes. But there are some who actually think it’s OK to sleep around because it really is just sex. At the end of the day, they are going home to their to their partner; they are providing for their partner, they are ‘committed’ to their partner. So what’s the bid deal? The irony is it is a big deal. Because commitment is clearly no longer what it used to be, the word has developed a whole new meaning. It’s rarely about being together in sickness and health, for richer or poorer etc. Today, it’s about selfish needs. Marriage now rests on ‘convenience’. Confusing the C word… Mention the ‘C’ word and you are bound to get varied responses. A sexy bombshell, who has been in a couple of high-profile romance says, “It means everything to me.” while her equally sexy sister says, “It’s just become a word”. Another heartthrob candidly confesses that six months ago, he would have been working his charm on the ladies but today, he is in a serious relationship and doesn’t want to break his sweetheart’s trust, especially since his track record sucks! A young hottie sincerely feels ‘he can keep love and sex separate’. He believes that he can never ever love another, yet he has faltered on occasions simply for physical reasons. He calls it ‘A momentary flirtation’. His lifelong “commitment” is to only one lady. What does this prove? Utter confusion and a warped sense of values! Totally committed… But fear not, for there is hope yet. Nick and Christopher, a married couple, says you can never go wrong if you marry your best friend. They would never abuse each other’s trust. Jonathan, who has been married for three years, explains although there is temptation, he wouldn’t cheat on his partner simply because of his faith in God and respect for his partner. Jim can’t bear the thought of his wife cheating on him. Is he tempted? No, because the mere thought of her leaving him along with the kids, if he ever faltered, is worse than death! Commitment phobia… There are others who are afraid of ’settling down’. Steve, 40, remains a bachelor because he is not ready to settle down. He is an incredible man who has the distinction of being friends with every single one of his ex-girlfriends, simply because he has never lied to them about ‘commitment’. Today, the ‘C’ word has multiple meanings. One only hoped it wouldn’t equate to multiple partners! Expert Speak Why people stay in a relationship or a marriage? A relationship depends on how one views it. When married, it becomes a special investment, which also has religious connotations. Being with a person for a long period of time gives rise to emotions like affection and love. So people are compromise at the sake of their values. Also, a sense of security comes into play. But selfish motives can also allow a person to stick around for functional purposes. Why are people scared of making a commitment? People scared of committing usually suffer from some deep-seated emotional problems. A basic sense of insecurity could also lead to a situation wherein a partner is not willing to commit. While you can’t say whether its men or women who are less likely to commit, the most obvious reason as to why people are scared to commit is the lack of mutual trust. Ever Said: We Should Have Caught Bass By Now?

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

By Charles White Have you ever been on a lake and thought to yourself or said to your fishing partner, “We should have caught some fish by now”? Well, maybe it’s time to downsize. One reason to downsize is when the bass are going through the stages between spawn and postspawn like they are now in Ohio. We all have heard big lures catch big bass and that is true but there is a time when large lures just don’t cut it. When the bass are in the spawn to postspawn transition find the warmest water on the lake and try downsizing your lure. When you’re fishing a lake and know what the bass are eating, try to match it. Why throw a 10″ worm when they are eating 4 inch shad? That just doesn’t make sense. So if you know what the old bass is eating then match the size of your lure to the prey. Cold Fronts-This can be the worse fishing of all, especially if the front stalls. Bass become homebound, they don’t move far from cover for sure. Now is the time to downsize and/or drop-shot that small lure. Fishing Pressure-One of my favorite lakes is getting more and more fishing pressure each year. Big lures can make the bass very picky and can spook them easily. Now is when downsizing comes into play. I was fishing a lake just this past month and hadn’t had a hit, I watched a guy who was using light line and a spinning outfit and a 3″ tube lure and he had caught about 6 bass. Guess what I did? Yep, downsized! Here are times when downsizing comes into play: Cold fronts, Spawn to Postspawn, Clear water, Falling Water Temperatures, Match the Prey, Fishing Pressure. Just remember the strike zone is smaller and the fish hold closer to cover in these instances. Good Fishing to You! Charles has fished for bass for almost 50 years. He has fished from Florida to California and has caught more than 6,000 bass in his lifetime. His biggest bass is 12 pounds 14 ounces. Charles has helped many young people start their fishing career and has owned two fishing tackle stores in his lifetime. He now resides in Ohio. Charles new bass fishing CD is guaranteed to help you catch more big bass and is the number one seller in bass fishing CD’s. Beginners First Steps in Family History

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

By Nick Grbin Commencing your Family History actually begins at home. I would recommend you record your own details first. For example, your birth, christening/baptism (if appropriate), marriage, divorce(s), remarriage(s), the dates of birth, death etc (if appropriate) of your spouse, children and grandchildren. Congratulations, you have started your Family History. You must now work backwards and trace back your ancestors. If you have a common name, the challenge is more difficult, but dont despair, youre not alone. If you have an unusual name, your task may be easier than you think. Technically, it should be easier to trace the correct line of your ancestors. Start following your fathers line then your mothers. Once youre stuck start talking to your oldest relatives. Hopefully, granddad or grandma is still alive. Better still, the great grand parents. Often, when you dig enough someone may already have constructed a family tree. Get a copy and expand on it. You may have a relative overseas that you can work with to further your research. You should try to obtain any family records such as birth, death & marriages, wills, family photos, old bibles that may contain family information, diaries, letters and anything else that contains family information. Attend your local heritage or family history library. There are local family history societies you can join. Obtain books or a how to ebook that teaches you how to start. Reading magazine articles can help you get started. If youre really stuck, you can employ a professional genealogist. Check their credentials and fees first before hiring them. They should be professional members of their national genealogical society. Record your information on paper. Use the FREE Pedigree and Family Work Group Sheet provided on my web site. Storing your genealogy data on a computer is a great idea. You can easily share data with other family members or genealogists. I recommend you use software to store information. This will save you a lot of time and effort organizing your notes. You could have fun searching old local newspapers in your library and find articles regarding your ancestors. Visiting local heritage and Family History centers may uncover treasures of information concerning your ancestors. Its worth the trip. A final tip, keep a special log of where youve searched. Sometimes, even unsuccessful research could come alive when further information comes to hand. It also keeps you focused and on track. You learn all about how to use libraries and archives efficiently, and to uncover a whole new world you didnt know exists. Nick Grbin is the webmaster of http://www.genealogy4beginners.com The web site outlines a Genealogy Ebook that saves time, effort and money researching your Ancestors, You can subscribe to the FREE Family History for Beginners Newsletter with great tips & information.
